‘Storm in a Teacup’ (1986) is one of Leon Pericles most recognized and beloved etchings. Created in response to the hosting of the America’s Cup in Fremantle; Pericles captured the exciting intensity of the race whilst affectionately satirising the seriousness and pretence surrounding the arrival of the world’s most famous yachting regatta into Western Australia.

The cup in the centre of the etching shows 12m racing yachts surrounded by all the nautical clutter of the Fremantle docks, covered by a manic storm of aeronautical machines vying for access to the event.

A finishing piece of witty ephemera is the inclusion of a Lipton’s teabag label. This is both a reference to the domestically banality of the old saying, and a nod to Sir Thomas Lipton whose persistent efforts to win the race from 1899 made both him and his tea famous across the United States.
