The Tiggy Puggenheim Collection : Leon Pericles

50.00

EXHIBITION BOOK : PUBLISHED 1994

In 1990 Leon Pericles travelled to Europe, and while in Venice he visited the Peggy Guggenheim Museum. This was the seed for his inspiration in creating his own art patron Tiggy Puggenheim and the story which he developed around his much loved iconoclastic outback town of Widjimorphup.

This absurd yet charming story of Tiggy Puggenheim provides the backdrop and stage setting for ’The Cellar Collection’ and ’The European Collection’ which form part of the ’Tiggy Puggenheim Touring Collection’ shown at 20 galleries around Australia between December 1994 and August 1995.

As the era of grand blockbuster exhibitions increasingly brought us to great art works of unquestioned importance commanding great awe and reverence, Leon Pericles, using sharp satire and theatrical merry-making carefully stage manages his ’show’ which spoofs all the pretensions of the high society art scene while stealing some of it’s glamour.

There are only a few of these highly collectable exhibition books left for sale, and all are from the original printing in 1994. All units of this hardcover book are in good condition with dust jackets intact and only showing mild signs of wear.

It has been a long time since Gayleen, Shirl and Sybil formed the Royal East Widji Arts Society and I became an Honorary Life Member. I was delighted to see they scrubbed up the Gauguins, Seurats and other masterpieces they found in the old cellar of the Widjimorphup Town Hall and now this beaut shiela from New York, Tiggy Puggenhiem has copped the lot and included them all with some of her rare collection from Europe in this ripper of a book.

In my capacity as Australia’s Cultural Advisor to the United Nations, I met the old Dame in Brussels at an International Conference on Craft where I was presenting a paper on Chrocheted Teacosies in Australia. She is the absolute epitome of sophistication and lusciousness of fine art. She is the queen of exquisite taste and a classy tart to boot. She’s got more painting than you can poke a didgeridoo at and through the years has left her mark on just about everything that is called art.

Widjimorphup has kicked on somewhat since Tiggy arrived and the local folk really appreciate her efforts and generosity. Through the touring exhibition and publication of this book we anticipate a massive growth in tourism in Widji and if you’re in the area, come and see me personally. My office is opposite the bandstand in the main street and I’d be happy to sign a copy of this beaut book.

Mervyn Pigmorton, Lord Mayor of Widjimorphup 1994
